Making the most of a 'mini' getaway E-mail

Making the most of a 'mini' getaway (ARA) - Even in the best of times, many Americans feel guilty about spending time and money on vacation. Our track record for using the vacation days afforded to us is weak, at best. But the truth is, we all need a break to refresh ourselves and, ideally, enrich our lives. This year, vacation-deprived and time-starved travelers are pushing the notion of a "staycation" aside while opting for a "getawaycation."

In fact, according to the team at Monograms, a travel company specializing in personalized, independent travel packages, the popularity of "mini getaways" (vacations that are four days or less) has increased by 95 percent in 2010. Weeklong escapes are up by 50 percent. Some of the company's most popular destinations for short trips include London, Paris, Rome, New York, Boston, San Francisco and Washington, D.C.

Because quick getaways are, by definition, short, Scott Nisbet, president and CEO of Monograms, says travelers can feel pressure to pack as much fun into their trip as possible. Below are some tips to help people make the most of their getawaycation:

* Determine which "mini" experience is right for you. Are you looking for a getaway to allow you much-needed rest and relaxation or one overflowing with personal enrichment opportunities? Be honest with yourself and choose a destination and/or travel package that's in line with your needs and interests.

* Choose a "known" destination. Pick a place that you love or one that comes highly recommended by a trusted acquaintance for your mini getaway. If the destination is new to you, ask your friend or family member to provide suggestions about what to see and any other tips to help you make the most of your journey.

* Use experts to book an international travel package. A vacation, short or long, should still feel like a vacation. Instead of spending time and energy researching hotels, sightseeing or transportation logistics, consider working with a trusted travel agent or company that specializes in customizable travel packages to book the getaway of your dreams.

* Pick a centrally located hotel. Don't waste precious time traveling to and from your hotel on your weekend or week off.

* Ask the locals. As a local, in your hometown, you know the best bakery, coolest hangout or most unique flea market. Trust other "locals" in your destination to point you in the right direction. You can ask a shop owner, hotel concierge, or, if traveling internationally with Monograms, your personal Local Host, to ensure you're getting the best advice to make the most of your time away.

* Take a break on your break. Build in time to take pleasure in your surroundings. You can do this in a number of ways, such as enjoying a glass of regional wine while taking in a city view or beautiful landscape, people-watching in a park or even catching up on your reading at a neighborhood coffee shop. Trying to pack too much "go, go, go" into your mini getaway could leave you feeling exhausted or stressed.
