Preparing your home for the fall season is a necessary task that can be both financially and personally rewarding. It is fairly common for homeowners to go right into the winter season without inspecting their home and preparing for it, which can sometimes lead to unexpected expenses and a race against the weather. Be sure to complete the following tasks this autumn, before the weather turns inclement, to keep you and your family comfortable all winter long.
1. Furnace One of the most important components of a house in the wintertime is the furnace or heating system. Furnace filters should be checked and replaced when necessary, and a visual inspection of the filter should reveal if it needs to be changed or not. The furnace itself also needs to be inspected: the burner unit, pilot light, electronics and flue as improper installation or operation of furnace components can pose serious health risks like carbon monoxide poisoning and fire. For these reasons and more, furnace inspections and testing should be performed by a licensed professional in the fall season before peak demand begins.

(ARA) - A visit with your doctor is the best way to determine whether you have a cold or an allergy. While allergy symptoms and cold symptoms are very similar, there are some signs to look for if you want to know the difference.
1. Take a look at the color of your nasal discharge, mucous or saliva. Both allergies and colds cause a runny nose, but for cold sufferers, the discharge is usually green or brown - which is a sign of an infection. "If the mucous is clear - it is probably an allergy," says Dr. Carl Wurster, chair, Allied Health Department, at Brown Mackie College - Boise. The allergy comes from an allergen, while the cold indicates exposure to a virus.

Your car also probably came with a car maintenance book, filled with information on oil changes, exchanging filters, replacing spark plugs or belts, or even changing burned out light bulbs.

(ARA) - News that the air inside your home can actually harbor more pollutants and irritants than outside air may have you thinking about taking steps to improve your indoor air quality -- such as having your home's heating, air conditioning and ventilation system (HVAC) cleaned. With cool weather approaching, you know your family will spend more time indoors and you want the air they breathe to be as healthful as possible.
Duct cleaning is a good way to remove irritants from the air inside your home and can help your HVAC system function better for longer. But if you've ever had your ducts cleaned and wondered just what you paid for, you may be hesitant to go through the process again.
