(ARA) - Clean water is essential to life and long-term health, and the United States enjoys some of the safest, cleanest drinking water in the world. However, a recent study shows that up to 20 percent of U.S. water violates the Safe Drinking Water Act -- a federal law meant to ensure water quality.

As many as 49 million people have been exposed to water with higher concentrations of regulated chemicals, bacteria and radioactive substances than are deemed safe by the Environmental Protection Agency, according to the analysis. Even more alarming is that this number does not account for the millions of Americans who rely on well water, which is the homeowner's responsibility to maintain and, therefore is not regulated by the EPA.
